About this course

The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardized test that is accepted by universities globally for students applying for graduate (Master’s  or Doctorate) programs.

The test consists of 3 primary parts – Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Quantitative and Verbal, as well as a randomly inserted part – the Experiment Section.   The attributes of each test section is discussed below –

AWA Section

The AWA section has two essays lasting thirty minutes each where test takers have to write a response to the essay question using their analytical and writing skills. The two essays are averaged and scored on a scale of 1 to 6 points, in 0.5 increments.

Quantitative Section

The Quantitative Ability section (often termed the Quant portion) has two 35 minute sections, each containing 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The level of content tested on this section is about mid-school to high school Math, with questions involving calculations that can be done with the help of an online calculator. The Quant section is scored on a range of 130 to 170 points.

Verbal Section

The Verbal section comprises two parts of 30 minutes each, with each sub-section having 20 questions . The questions can be broadly divided into vocabulary and reading comprehensions. Students need to be familiar with word usage within  particular contexts.  The test involves both knowledge of vocabulary and analytical skills. The Verbal section is scored on a range of 130 to 170 points.

In addition to the test areas listed above, GRE also makes occasional random use of an “Experimental section”, which could be either Math or Verbal. The experimental section is not pre-announced to the students and when used, is randomly inserted.
